The Importance of Communication Skills in Today’s World

The Importance of Communication Skills
Language and communication are changing all the time. This is probably because of the fact that people change all the time. Although people are the main reason why communications change, there are a number of other factors why people have to be continually updated on their communication skills. The importance of communication skills is undeniable because of this.

Communication is affected by technology. New words and terminologies are coined to fit the new discoveries of technology. Here lies one importance of communication skills: Since language changes all the time, one must be able to keep up with the change. In other words, a person should have enough knowledge to continue upgrading his or her communication.

We have already seen the changes wrought by technology in language. There was a time when a spider made a web and a net was used to catch fish. There used to be a time when surfing actually involved boards and the sea. The importance of communication skills lies in the fact that those skills will help man progress with his language.

Communication is affected by culture. In the past, different cultures have been able to use whatever word they want to describe something. However, because of the realization that some words do offend other cultures, we have changed our language. The importance of communication skills lies in the fact that these skills help with the social interaction of people.

Having communication skills are important because man is not meant to be alone. Each of us needs other people in order to live a full life.

There are other factors that help in the continuous transformation of communication. However, the point is that these factors also contribute to the importance of communication skills.

The biggest importance of communication skills is the fact that it is the way through which our civilization continues to flourish. The act of passing on knowledge from generation to generation is communication. It is through communication that we manage to continue our discoveries.

Another importance of communication skills lies in expression. Man’s experiences in life need an outlet. People need some ways to express themselves in order for others to share their experiences. However, people need communication skills in order to do this effectively. Communication skills mean the difference between a doodle and a masterpiece. Some people may disagree with this importance of communication skills, and they may say that art is not required to live. However, have you ever realized that though we work to live, art is what we live for?

The importance of communication skills lies in the fact that these skills allow us to put order in the chaos of human interaction. Without communication skills, people would be unable to understand the desires of each other and mutual growth would be impossible. Helping each other is the reason we have progressed through all of these years, and it is the reason we survive until this day.

It is through unity and solidarity that we man has reached these heights, and this is made possible through communication. The everyday occurrences of violence resulting from misunderstandings show us just what would happen if communication skills were non-existent. Communication skills are important because we need to be able to relate with the world around us. We need to be able to express ourselves.

Say What You Mean: Developing Verbal Communication Skills

Developing Verbal Communication Skills
Words are said to be man’s greatest achievement. However, many people would argue that verbal communication was developed not out of want, but out of need. People needed verbal communication in order for our species to survive. This is the reason more and more people aim to develop their verbal communication skills.

Developing good communication skills can be a tough job. However, if you try to make use of the old style of “divide and conquer”, you might be able to do it quite easily. How do you divide the job of developing verbal communication skills?

1) Oral –This is the area of verbal communication skills that we most often use. This category encompasses the spoken word. In focusing on this front, you will be able to improve your skills in conversation. So how do you develop this verbal communication skill? Once again, we divide and we conquer.

a) Speaking – Some people speak too much without saying anything. In order to develop this verbal communication skill, you need to be able to control your tongue. The secret to being a successful speaker is thinking about what to say before you say it. Consider the consequences of your words. We all know that no person can say the right thing all of the time. However, you should learn to realize the fact that this verbal communication skill can be developed and nurtured.

Many people take this for granted, since they have been doing it for their whole lives. This is the reason why language has deteriorated today. People have no care for grammar, reasoning that grammar is one instrument of “the man”.

b) Listening – Listening is different from hearing. We do not control our hearing consciously. However, when we listen, we do so because we choose it. Listening means that you should not only hear what other people are saying, but you should be able to understand it as well. By learning how to listen properly to other people, you will be able to be a much more effective conversationalist.

2) Written – Because of technology, this form of verbal communication skills is rarely used today. People hate having to read and write, thinking that it is just too much work. However, developing this verbal communication skill is essential because you can’t record and transmit everything, can you?

a) Writing – Writing is one of those activities that have changed because of technology. In the past, development of effective written verbal communication skills involves having to make sure that your handwriting was legible. Because of technology, however, we now need only to focus on grammar and spelling in order to communicate effectively through this method. In order to develop your writing skills, you should try to seek the opinion of other people. You should see if your writing transmits your message clearly.

b) Reading – When reading, try to interpret messages as clearly as possible. Each of us has an idea about what a message is all about. However, in some cases, we need to interpret them the way the writer wants them to be interpreted. This is true for memorandums, laws and other “official” written correspondence. Developing your verbal communication skill needs patience and practice. You need to read more in order to learn how to read better. In doing so, you will also be able to improve other skills.

Tips to Have Great Interpersonal Communication Skills

Interpersonal Communication Skills
One of the keys to success is having great interpersonal communication skills. People with interpersonal communication skills have a higher chance to “make it” in the world today. This is because people have finally realized the importance of having the right connections in business.

Interpersonal communication skills are not inborn. Sure, some people are born with characteristics that naturally attract people to communicate with them. However, Interpersonal communication skills can be nurtured in order to be more effective.

So how should you develop interpersonal communication skills?

1) Accept your imperfections – The biggest obstacle to improvement is ego. People who think that there’s nothing wrong with their interpersonal communication skills would naturally take no steps to improve them. In order to develop your interpersonal communication skills, you need to realize the fact that they need development. If there is one thing that man should seek in life, it is improvement.

2) Try to understand – Understanding is the key to having great interpersonal communication skills. If you learn how to understand others, you will be able to realize the fact that communication really is not that hard. It’s all about putting yourself in the shoes of the other party and trying to see your message through their point of view. Although no one can really claim to be able to understand another person, making an effort to do so will really get you close.

3) Don’t just hear. Listen – People have a trouble distinguishing listening from hearing. Here’s the deal: Listening is active while hearing is passive. People cannot consciously control their ability to hear. What they can control is their ability to focus. Listening is composed of focusing your hearing on a conversation. When you are trying to communicate, you cannot just stop at hearing what the other party has to say, you should be able to understand.

4) Think before you talk – There are so many people today who speak a lot of words but fail to really say anything. The so-called “foot-in-mouth” disease is slowly spreading among our culture. In order to prevent this, think hard about the repercussions of what you are going to say. Remember that people who can be understood with just one word appear smarter than people who talk with the oral equivalent of an encyclopedia.

5) Think before you act – Learning about the aspects of non-verbal communication is just as important as knowing when to talk. Some people can say whole sentences with just a gesture or a facial expression. In order for you to improve your interpersonal communication skills, you should also pay attention to your non-verbal communication. People may think that non-verbal communication does not really happen at a conscious level, but you can learn how to control them. Let’s take facial features, for example. People have been neutralizing their facial expressions for a long time. Hence, we have things such as the poker face.

Do not be rash with your actions. Think things through.

6) Practice – The best way to improve your interpersonal communication skills is to use them. In order to learn how much progress you’ve made and how much you still have to go, you need to use those skills everyday. Okay, so people actually use their interpersonal communication skills on a daily basis. What this tip means is that you should try to improve daily. Remember that your goal should always be becoming better.
